Sonographers
Medical sonographers are integral to B.C.’s health-care system, utilizing ultrasound technology to produce diagnostic images that assist in monitoring pregnancies and diagnosing various medical conditions, including cardiac, vascular, and abdominal disorders.

About sonographers
Medical sonographers operate ultrasound equipment to scan the body and create ultrasound images, which are used to assess organs, tissues, and blood flow, diagnose medical conditions, and inform treatment options. Sonographers help physicians diagnose cardiac, vascular and other medical disorders, and work in clinics and hospitals.
Sonographer practice is diverse and dynamic, and sonographers are active in many areas of healthcare. In Canada, there are three areas of practice, including general, cardiac, and vascular sonography. A sonographer’s area of practice will determine the patients they see and the types of ultrasound scans they perform. Job duties may include:
- Operating ultrasound equipment and obtaining scans of organs, tissues, and blood flow.
- Informing patients about the ultrasound scan process and what to expect from follow-up from their primary care provider or specialist.
- Providing input/assessment of the scan and images to physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Sonographers may also become educators, get involved with research, act as consulting experts in ultrasound technology, or take on leadership roles in medical imaging administration in B.C.’s healthcare system.
To be eligible for employment in B.C., sonographers must have graduated from a recognized/accredited program and have current certification or eligibility for membership with Sonography Canada.
Sonographers are in high demand in B.C., with jobs available across the province in public health authority settings, as well as privately owned community imaging clinics.
