Words, phrases or terms you might not know from BCHealthCareers.ca. Use this quick guide to understand what they mean.

  • Applicable shift premiums

    This is extra pay that can be given to health professionals asked to work less-desirable shifts like evenings or nights, or for being called in on short notice. 

  • Culturally appropriate

    Increasing access to care for Indigenous people and communities – based on respecting their traditional and unique perspectives while actively working to eliminate long-standing racism and discrimination in the health-care system. 

  • Language proficiency requirements

    Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians must have the language skills to safely deliver care and effectively communicate with patients. 

  • Nurse-to-patient ratios

    These ratios mean that B.C. has the nurses needed to provide quality care based on the number of patients in a hospital unit. 

  • Provisional licensing

    This allows you to start your health care practice while meeting any outstanding requirements (for example, examinations or supervised practice hours) to be fully registered. 

  • Regular-status employees

    These are health professionals who have met the educational and skill requirements needed to practice in B.C. 

  • Regulated professions

    In B.C., to make sure people receive quality public health care, 26 health professions are overseen by regulatory colleges that uphold standards and certification.

  • Streamlined immigration processes

    The B.C. government is simplifying the process for qualified health-care professionals to move to B.C. and begin their practice.
