Medical radiation technologists
Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs) use advanced imaging and radiation therapy technologies to support patient care through skilled, compassionate practice.

About medical radiation technologists
Medical radiation technologists are highly skilled and compassionate professionals who play a vital role in diagnosing and treating patients through the use of advanced imaging and radiation therapy technologies.
Medical radiation technologists in B.C. specialize in one of four disciplines, each supporting critical elements of patient care:
- Radiological technologists perform general and specialized X-ray procedures to capture diagnostic images of bones, tissues, and organs. Their work is essential in identifying fractures, infections, and other internal conditions quickly and accurately.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologists operate MRI scanners, which use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create high-resolution, cross-sectional images. These are particularly valuable in diagnosing neurological, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular conditions.
- Nuclear medicine technologists use radiopharmaceuticals and specialized imaging equipment to observe how organs and tissues function. This technique supports the early detection and monitoring of conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and thyroid disorders.
- Radiation therapists are integral to cancer care, delivering carefully planned radiation treatments that target tumors with precision. They work closely with oncologists and patients throughout the treatment journey, ensuring safety, effectiveness, and compassionate care.
To be eligible to work as an MRT in B.C., applicants must be certified by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). This includes successful completion of the CAMRT national certification exam. As MRTs are not currently regulated in B.C., all applicants—including internationally educated MRTs—must undergo credential assessment and certification through CAMRT. More information on this process is available at www.camrt.ca.
